A recently released short film delves into the journey of Techno music through past, present, and future. Watch it for free on YouTube below.

Reflecting on its history, How Techno Shapes The Future explains how the genre was born as a futuristic sound that got people moving on the dancefloors of Detroit, eventually migrating to Europe, with Frankfurt coining the term “techno” in the 1980s.

The film delves into the influence of the techno scene on social media platforms like TikTok and its ripple effect on pop music and fashion, illustrating how the need to present everything online risks homogenizing the culture, stifling the individuality and experimentation that have been integral to the genre.

The commercialization of techno has turned it into a multi-million-dollar industry, with successful artists travelling on private jets, and many say the authenticity of the genre has diminished as it’s become more mainstream and capitalistic – as depicted in the doco.

The 26-minute film is from German state TV broadcaster Deutsche Welle and features interviewees including Sven Väth, Nicky Böhm, Stacey Hale, Nur Jaber, Luca Eck and Nicky Böhm among others.

Enjoy.
