A quick ‘no BS’ review of the DJ record pool Crate Connect

Overview

As one of our trusted affiliate partners, we thought we’d give a quick ‘no BS’ review of the Canadian-based all-in-one DJ record pool, Crate Connect.

As well as listing the key genres they offer, we’ll quickly break down what DJs can expect from a subscription, and why we love the service.

How much does it cost?

They basically have 3 different subscription options, all of which offer full access to their service… ie unlimited downloads.

30 days = $22 USD

90 days = $55 USD

180 days = $99 USD

Note: the ‘big name’ record pools typically charge upwards of $30 US per month for full site access.

Crate Connect review:

First off, these guys are an ‘all-in-one’ DJ pool, which simply means they cater for all kinds of DJs. As you can see from the genre list (see table below), they carry more than 100 different sub-genres, the top 40, and also have handy special event playlists.

As a non-specialist record pool, a service like Crate Connect is best suited to open-format DJs: mobile & event DJs, commercial-club DJs, and just any industry professional wanting access to a broad selection of music & new releases from record labels and music producers.

Whilst the website might look fairly basic on the front end, once you’ve signed up, the user interface is nice & simple, offering a robust search/filtering function; sorting either by genre, BPM, key, artist & title, or year.

As far as track versions and DJ tools are concerned, they provide various exclusive intro edits (radio & club versions), remixes and also transitions. In addition to MP3s, you can often get these in uncompressed WAV files, which is something that very few DJ pools offer.

Crate Connect doesn’t have a dedicated mobile app, although they do have a well-optimized mobile version called ‘Crate Connect GO’. Here you can easily allocate tracks to a crate for a later download.

To summarize… as well as being great value for money compared to other record pools, we love the broad selection of genres you get with Crate Connect, and there’s no doubt it’s a hidden gem for working DJs.

Whilst they might not have some of the bells & whistles of the market leaders (in terms of website design and other ‘non-essential’ stuff), it’s simple & easy to use, and ultimately achieves the desired effect: to provide working DJs with a solid foundation to build & maintain a professional music collection in a cost-effective way. Check out their full genre list in the table below.
