Rane announces new 4-channel DJ controller with motorized platters, the Rane Performer

DJ using the Rane Performer

Having been somewhat known about in the DJ community for months now, Rane has now officially announced their new 4-channel performance DJ controller – the key selling point being the high-torque motorized platters – the Rane Performer!

Offering the kind of build quality that we’ve come to expect from Rane (it’s solid, and built like a tank!), the unit boasts market-leading sound, combining innovative features and high-end performance capabilities.

By closest comparison to their range, the Performer is very similar to the Rane Four. That is, both units have 4 channels and offer tight integration with Serato DJ Pro and stems, with the Performer coming in at 500 bucks more at $1,999 USD.

Differences from the Rane Four at a glance

Aside from the motorized platters, here are the key differences between the Performer and the Rane Four:

  • The Performer has an enhanced FX suite incorporating 29 Main FX controllable via intuitive paddle triggers, and 4 knob-controlled Channel FX (or Fader FX).
  • The Performer has improved, adjustable up-faders that inherit the same mechanical dual-rail system from the MAG FOUR crossfader.
  • The larger screens on the Performer’s jog wheels have a more detailed wave view and allow you to browse your library.
  • The Performer is significantly heavier than the Rane Four due to the motorized platters (almost 50%: 12.8 kg compared to 8.27kg).

Motorized aluminium platters

Obviously the main highlight of the Performer is the high-torque, aluminium motorized platters. These are equipped with high-definition 3.5” LCD screens that show essential track information, library views, waveform dynamics, and album artwork. Additionally, the Performer’s Day Mode guarantees screen visibility in all lighting conditions, from dark clubs to bright stages.

Expanded FX Capabilities

Rane has significantly enhanced the FX suite in the Performer, incorporating 29 Main FX controllable via intuitive paddle triggers, and 4 knob-controlled Channel FX. This FX suite includes industry favourites and innovative new sounds.

Integration with Serato DJ Pro ensures seamless application of all effects, whether using the built-in hardware FX or Serato’s extensive software FX library. Whilst these enhancements are significant, it’s worth mentioning that the additional effects on the Rane Performer would be considered non-essential for most DJs.

Precision Feel Faders

The Performer features the MAG FOUR crossfader and four super-smooth ‘precision feel’ volume faders with adjustable tension and customizable fader curves and reversals. This customization enables you to tailor the controller’s feel to your exact preferences.

Other market competition & considerations

By comparison, if you still want motorized platters but don’t need the extra bells & whistles that the Rane Performer brings, then the Rane One is a simpler, 2-channel option, coming in $700 cheaper at $1,300 US.

Pioneer’s closest competition is the DDJ-REV7 (the 2-channel beast with motorized platters and a dedicated scratch-style layout), which is also priced at $1,999 US.

Pioneer’s closest competition without motorized platters (thus more in competition with the Rane Four) is the DDJ-FLX10, which is priced similar to the Rane Four, at $1,600 US. We break down all of these controllers in more depth in this post: 7 of The Best Top-Tier DJ Controllers.

Conclusion/where to buy

The new Rane Performer is best suited to performance/open-format DJs who want deep integration with Serato (including on-board stems), motorized platters for that authentic vinyl feel, use of 4-channels, and all the bells & whistles to go with it.

It’s available now for $1,999 USD. For more information, visit Rane’s website.
