Tomorrowland 2021 is officially cancelled; organisers release statement

For the second year in a row, Tomorrowland’s flagship festival – which usually attracts 400,000 festival-goers over two weekends – will not be going ahead in 2021 due to Covid-19.

As DJ Mag reported last week, local Belgium mayors (in Boom and Rumst) had placed a ban on this year’s event happening due to concerns over rising coronavirus cases overseas.

Unfortunatley, the most recent statement from Tomorrowland 100% confirms the decision won’t be overturned.

Organisers had this to say:

‘’It is a huge financial blow for us as an organisation to lose our annual turnover almost entirely for the second year in a row, but also for the suppliers, freelancers, artists and associations involved who always contribute passionately to Tomorrowland.’’

‘’Today, with a heavy heart, more than 50 million euros worth of orders with dozens of loyal Belgian suppliers were cancelled. In addition, this is another setback for the travel and hotel industries in Belgium; over a period of 2 weeks during the festival, more than 80% of the Brussels and Antwerp hotel capacities are used by visitors, artists and crews.’’

As we reported just two weeks ago, things were looking promising when the Belgium government announced it wanted to reopen the country by September 1st, having tentatively approved events with up to 75,000 capacity per day.

Organisers explain how they won’t be applying for a second permit, and also won’t be taking any legal action against the local Belgium authorities.

Don’t forget you can still check out Tomorrowland’s virtual festival: Tomorrowland – Around The World on the 16th & 17th July.
